Step by step 4 days program:

  1. Day (~3h): Creation of a Sample Mini Hat

First day mini hat samplers can be used as stylish egg warmers!

First day mini hat samplers can be used as stylish egg warmers!

What you will learn through the samplers:

  • sculptural template making with flaps

  • creating a seamless hollow form

  • surface design with fiber painting, relief and nuno felting techniques

  • adding extensions like cords, crests …

  • free form shaping: pleats, spirals, snail forms…

2. Day (~2h): Construction of the original hat template on paper in “final” and “layout size”

You will learn how to draw a 2D hat shape and how to enlarge it to make the template in “layout size”. This template is then copied on polyethylene foam and I will show how to start the wool layout. Students have to make their own polyethylene foam (or bubble wrap) template and start the layout for the next day.

3. Day (~2h): Surface design and sculpting

Together we will work on the surface design. I will show several techniques how to design the surface and give tips and advice. We’ll start shaping the hat and I will demonstrate some of the endless possibilities how to make an outstanding form. Students have another day to play around with the techniques taught:

  • relief techniques

  • fiber painting

  • nunofelting

  • adding flaps, crest, cords…

  • shaping the sculptural hat

4. Day (~1h30): Questions & answers, showing off the finished felt hats, feedback and advice

To round off the workshop we will meet to show the work of each student, give feedback and advises to allow each student to progress and affirm her personal style. Questions are welcome!
