This art is not (only) to wear
Those of you who follow me for a while, might be aware that I was struggling a lot when I was rejected from “La Maison des Artistes” – a French artist organization allowing to pay less charges.
The reason they fired me was that art can’t be functional! As soon as something can be worn or carried into everyday life, for them it’s not art but craft!
What I struggle with is that on the other hand, the Sunday afternoon painter who doesn’t commit his whole life developing his very own style, pushing the limits of a given medium further with each creations, he’s will be accepted by this organization and qualified as an artiste… No matter if he just copies others…As he has a “day” job he doesn’t struggle to make a living. Sounds wired?
IT IS!!!
Proving that art can be functional
But somehow I’m grateful they fired me. It allowed me to reflect on my art and reinforced my believe that art is not the finished item but a way of thinking and making it. I ever since feel not only like an artist but as an artist with a matter :). With nearly every piece I make I prouve that art can be functional and fun!
Art Vest and Art Bag NOT to wear
These two items are made with a wink – even so it’s an art vest and a bag, they aren’t that functional as they may appear. The art vest went a bit to stiff to be worn in everyday life and I don’t recommend putting heavy or many things in the art bag as it is fragile.
Both pieces are meant to be exposed and should only be worn with precaution and occasionally. Should I try to get into the Maison des artistes again? Not sure they have a lot of humor :).
What do ou believe in? Can art be functional or not?
I still wonder if I should try a new entry to “La Maison des Artistes” – but not sure they have a sense of humor :).
With a huge smile,
AM
