Experimental mixed media paper felt wall art
Just like to share the beautiful outcome from a special class taught online in my “besties” group: mixed media paper felt wall art based on digital painting and combined with embroidery, transfer and painting techniques.
The idea started with Henry Matisse’s “Nudes”: the first exercise was to outline digitally a body shape based on a photo. The shape was then decomposed, printed and copied on different colored kozo papers. In a free and playful way the out-cut body shapes where recomposed onto a wool fiber background.
Applying learnt techniques and felting together online
The digital part, the wool layout and composition was a “homework”. The former mixed media students had to prepare it beforehand by following and applying the instructions given during the MMTA class. The felting part happened in a live online session, allowing me to give some advises about how to best blend papers and wool, as this had been not really been part of the MMTA1 class and still an issue for some of the students.
It was another great session with lots of laughter. So amazing to be able to connect around a commun passion in real time from around the world!
Embellishment with free motion stitching and paint
For those who liked and had time, the felted composition was then embroidered and painted. The heads where added again in digital collage techniques.
I love the result and am happy (and proud ;))how each students uniqueness shows though. Each wall hanging matches perfectly the beautiful personalities of the participants!
New ways to teach Mixed Media Textile Art
This lesson was an experiment, a new way to transmit my skills and passion for mixed media textile art. While in the official MMTA class my aim is to open possibilities how to enhance the felted surface and bust my students creativity, the idea was here to show a process! How to find inspiration- Matisse’s Nudes - and transform it along the way into something completely different. By the end only the idea of the nude and the collage techniques remained.
This class is a helpful experience for me to find new teaching approaches. I’m currently working on the program for a Mixed Media Textile Art class 2, which will allow former MMTA1 students to apply their new skills and get a better flow in the working process. I’m pretty sure, a similar exercise like the one described here, will figure in it. This second class will be accessible for students who have followed the initial class, only!
